Spring Concert with TCMS at FRES

Posted on

Monday night we gathered as we have many times to see what you’ve been up to and admire your accomplishments.

This time we got to hear you and the rest of the (very large) 6th grade chorus sign some really fun and creative songs. You really like your choral director, Ms. Howard, a long-term sub. A few days after Monday’s concert, you played your piano recital piece for her (and the class).

I love how these pictures show you and your friends growing up so beautifully while still maintaining your awesome spirit.

Love that you are stretching and trying new things all the time! Can’t wait for the next time!! Love you!

Your “Special” Trip

Posted on

May 2017 was an incredibly special month… first and foremost because it was the time for your “Ten Year Old Trip” even though you were 12. As you know, some time after each child turned 10, we took each of you for a special trip. Madey was first – when she was 10, we took her to Israel. When Dan was 13 I think, we took him to Austria.

And this year we took you to Italy.

The trip was incredible! 3-4 days in Rome and the same on Capri. Amazing!! Some highlights:

When you list the highlights, you start with gelato, and then every other thing you list is followed again by gelato. Some days you had 3-4 gelatos in a day. A small was PLENTY big, the flavors changed regularly and you could get two flavors in any small regardless of which store you went to. The cost was about 2.50 euros (the exchange rate was about 1:1 which was easy to think about).

Other highlights from Rome:

Starting with a segway tour to see all the places we had read about and would visit this trip in relation to each other…What a fun adventure!! None of us had ever ridden one before, so that was just as much fun as seeing Rome! We were working on staying awake to manage our jet lag, and that did it. We were tired when we were done, but we were also happy.

The historic places of Rome were as breath-taking as you can imagine. We had listened to the book Cleopatra’s Daughter before we arrived and WHAT A GIFT THAT WAS!! The book is historical fiction mystery novel told from the perspective of Cleopatra’s 10-year old daughter Selene. Through this awesome adventure, we learned about the famous sites in the context of how this young girl lived them. We met Agrippa who built many of the aqueducts in Rome. We traveled with Selene’s friends to the Circus Maximus to watch and bet on the horse races. We went with them to the Forum to watch trials and shop. We viewed the Egyptian obelisks knowing that they were taken from Egypt to Rome when Selene’s mom and dad died. We were horrified and awestruck at the Colosseum to see what “entertainment” of brutality looked like. We were aware that all of these incredible structures were built when Selene was alive in like 35BC!! Over 2000 years ago, and there they still were!!

Here are some of our favorite pictures:

Starting with gelato of course…

First champagne and first cappuccino…

Starting off with a Rome Segway tour…

PANTHEON
These were of the Pantheon, now called the Basilica… definitely one of my FAVORITE places… the dome was an architectural amazement given what we knew 2000 years ago, and the open circle at the top (ocular I think) allowed the sun to BEAM in like the most incredible spotlight. Some people believe that it doesn’t rain inside the building, but it does… if you look closely you can find the drain holes in the floor. Also, it has Agrippa’s name on it – a person from history that I really came to like a lot from the book.

THE VATICAN MUSEUM, SISTINE CHAPEL AND SAINT PETER’S BASILICA

TREVI FOUNTAIN
If you throw a coin with your right hand over your left shoulder, your wish to come back and visit Rome again will be granted. Can’t wait for that!!

THE “BIOPARKO di ROMA”

The Colosseum

The Bath House

New Friends from Rome

The cute boy on the bus and your horror with me about noticing him:

Our AMAZING apartment

Other pictures of the ruins, the obelisk, eating in Rome, what we called “broccoli trees” (that were everywhere), the rose garden that was fully in bloom, and DJ’s Italian haircut… What an awesome time!

CAPRI and ANACAPRI
After spending from Sunday – Wednesday in Rome, we headed south to “Napoli” to board a high-speed boat to the island of Capri – where Selene and her family also vacationed 2000 years ago.

The Mediterranean Sea was so blue, the hikes were intense, the sun was ALWAYS shining, the buses were super full, the roads were mostly switchbacks, the shops were fantastic, but by far, the best part of Capri were the new friends we met!! I really hope they come to America to visit:

Linus & Lucy: Summer 2016 Piano Recital

Posted on

You did absolutely great in front of an audience! And you’ve done it even better many other times. I could not be more proud of how hard you worked over the past 7 months on this song – stretching your fingers, working on synchronizing difficult hand rhythms, persisting through the struggle. This was the last recital that you would perform with Madey. Treasured times for sure.

No more recess…

Posted on

How is that for the saddest perspective on graduating from elementary school. Next year you will be in 6th grade at the middle school. As I was driving you to your last day of school you announced,

Today is my last day of recess for my whole life.

We both sighed.

Monday was your “Moving Up” ceremony, and Wednesday was the last day. You definitely won the award in many people eyes, mine included, for best “Moving Up” day outfit!! You rocked the shoes!!

They had a little party in your classroom afterward – popsicles and everything! YUM!!

Seabreeze and Field Study – Love being your chaperone

Posted on

IMG_6084

I signed up to chaperone the stream study, and you signed me up to also do the Seabreeze trip. I playfully complained, but deep down, I was so honored that you wanted me to be at both trips. I love getting to know the friends you will be growing up with through high school graduation – and their parents. I love supporting you in this school world that I have little access to.

I pretty much just love being with you.

Spring Break – National Park #4

Posted on

This is an email I just sent to our extended family…. we sure did have an awesome time!! You and I are beginning to really love our adventures together!! I love that!! You are my navigator, and together we figure out where we want to go!! We ended this trip with the BEST ICE CREAM IN NASHVILLE – I think the world actually. We both had “Savannah Betterment.” YUM!!! I love you Peanut Butter!!!
IMG_4479

We just got back from a week long trip to Nashville with a quick trip to neighboring Kentucky. Madey and Jim were with Maya and me until Thursday. Maya and I stayed a few days more and came back Sunday.

Sunday-Tuesday – Mammoth Caves National Park in Kentucky, short cave tour and horseback riding. Slept at an organic farm run by Mom and 3 daughters – collected eggs each day (that we ate for breakfast) and fed all the animals. 100 adult chickens, 40 babies, 3 bunnies, 5 dogs with puppies born the day we arrived, goats, a chameleon, bird, fish… awesome experience. We laid on hammocks and jumped on a trampoline; shopped in an Amish store, and I thought about Dad and Mom a lot! You would LOVE this place!!

Tuesday – Thursday – Stayed with the person we call “Best Friend Dave” (Jim’s best friend) and his wife AnnMarie and their beautiful 2 children – Jacob (3 years old) and Sophia (5 years old). They used to live in Rochester (Dave was Jim’s doc student), until Dave took a job at Vanderbilt. We hadn’t met Jacob yet, as he was born in Nashville. We made art at the Frist Center, ate at Nashville icons, went to an amazing botanical garden called Cheekwood that reminded us of “Meijer’s Gardens” in Bianca and Mark’s neighborhood (a must see if you haven’t yet!!). We collected frogs at varied stages of their life cycle in a pond and saw an incredible organic vegetable garden in bloom.

Thursday-Saturday – Maya and I went to her first conference – National Science Teachers Association annual meeting. We had a BLAST!! Fun toys, games, stickers, movies, demonstrations all over, and everyone loved engaging a fun kid like Maya. Maya was great about going to sessions that were more talking-based as well (she made movies on her iPad from past home movies we had taken). We met amazing scientists doing fascinating work on patterns in nature and the coexistence of various animals that would appear to be competing for scarce resources. Cool, hip, creative, fun, articulate young scientists.

Got home at midnight on Sunday to a crazy house – ALL of our first floor (including fridge, washer, dryer, piano… you get the idea) was moved out to our garage so our floors could be redone. They looked great, but wow!!

So, Jim took me to a spa. We are at Mirabeau – a beautiful place about 90 minutes from Rochester – a place we go about twice a year for “marriage improvement.”

It must work because today we celebrate our 8th anniversary. 🙂
